Today I had a facial. My words can barely do this little retreat justice. I have never felt so luxuriously distant from my not so luxurious cereal city as I did during these peaceful, pampering moments. My friend, Susan is in process to becoming an esthetician. This month she was able to offer a certain number of facials at half price. And because she is a close friend, I took advantage of the opportunity-very oblivious to what was in store for me. And I was totally set up for a delightful surprise.
I was actually clueless. When I first arrived I was asked to fill out a form about myself-the somewhat typical overview of your skin and health. I am a "regular" at this beauty school where they offer discounted services by their students and I have always been pleased with the atmosphere and especially the ever-refreshed and artful decor throughout. However, I have never been to the "spa" area which was very comfortable and decorated with the same appealing taste. OK, next is when I started realizing I hadn't properly envisioned what I was in for. Susan handed me my "basket" and directed me to the bathroom. In my basket I found a towel wrap, headband, and a beautiful, handmade paper flower-Susan's personal touch for friends. I had no idea this facial would entail getting unclothed. I am one who really likes to experience things to the full extent. And today that meant using that towel wrap and not leaving my jeans on underneath even though I hadn't freshly shaved my legs. Anyway, when I returned I noticed Susan was speaking quietly and thought I should follow suit though I still had no idea what a peaceful retreat the people on the other side of the spa room door were having. And then we entered. There were four other ladies receiving facials. The room was beautiful, professional, and serene with only the soft hum of the steamers. I lied down on the comfortable table cacooned by the fresh, fluffy blankets and Susan started a tasteful nature/instrumental that added so much to the experience that I was convinced that opening my eyes would confirm that I was truly in some tropical paradise surrounded by warm sand and sparkling water. As Susan massaged the series of whatever it was she put on my face (I know she took great care in picking out what products would be best for me but I was in my own little world and didn't so much care what it was), followed by the warmed washcloths, she also massaged my arms, neck, and shoulders. I'm really not sure if I actually fell asleep but I entered a state of peaceful relaxation that isn't typical in my world. It was amazing. Totally. If you are able to take an opportunity to pamper yourself or if you are stuck trying to figure out a gift for someone you love (very much)-think facial. Thanks Susan.
